The Taco Stand, from the owners of the Burger Mutual

How may the owners of Houston’s successful The Burger Mutual notion strategy tell apart themselves with their first taco café in a taco-obsessed city?

Their attempts start nowadays as The Taco Stand opens at 2018 N. Shepherd – the first taco notion from associates Shawn Bermudez and chef Matthew Pak. Situated adjoining for their Burger Mutual in the Heights, the brand new taco enterprise will surely delight supporters of the associated traditional and innovative burger efforts.

But does it gather with Houston’s taco cognoscenti? Bermudez and Pak claimed their aim is taco authenticity. By that, it means devotion to the different fundamental parts of the taco.

“It’s all about the tortilla, the meat, and the salsa,” Pak said.

The salsa: Not content to offer the standard combo of simple red and natural, the café has concocted five salsas – steamy raw jalapeno, roasting tomatillo, salsa Rojas, habanera, and Chile de Arbor – it’ll function alongside pickled onions, jalapeno, and pickled escabeche. These condiments will be accessible from a salsa club that will be staffed instead of conventional serve-yourself.

Parched? The Taco Stand is ready to wet your whistle with daily Aguas Fresca’s (horchata, Jamaica and lemonade), Michalaras, beer in may, container, and draft. The margarita array contains typical strawberry and pear freezing and two measurements (8 and 12 ounces) of canned margaritas created in-house. The margaritas are manufactured with 100 percent orange agave tequila. For drive-thru clients, these take-away cocktails would have been a game-changer.

And probably this is the most helpful description for Bermudez’s and Pak’s endeavor. They are perhaps not reinventing the informal taqueria concept. But they’re undoubtedly making it more appealing (generous terrace interior and terrace seating with lots of mild and a straightforward, welcoming design), more effective (clean signage and dual home lines providing dine-in and drive-thru customers equally), and more enjoyable (those freezing and canned margaritas alone).

The brand new taco stand seeks to complete what the associates have achieved with their burger joints (Montrose, Heights, and the approaching Webster keep at Bay brook Mall) at its center. “We wanted a spot like Burger Mutual – economical and relaxed,” Pak said. “We are perhaps not attempting to contend with areas like Torch’s of Velvet Taco.”

Ah, nevertheless, they are. The Dallas-based taco chain Velvet Taco lately exposed its newest Houston spot at 2001 N. Shepherd (and its first drive-thru), only a quesadilla’s toss from The Taco Stand. It’s across the street. Allow Heights taco conflict to begin.
